Avalanche Foundation Launches Community Grants Program with Gitcoin
The Avalanche Foundation (the Foundation) is launching the Avalanche Community Grants Program, an initiative encouraging projects and developers to build in Avalanche’s growing ecosystem. In partnership with Gitcoin, the largest and longest-running Web3 grants program, the Foundation will allocate grant funds to match community donations and bolster crowdfunding within the ecosystem. For the first time, the Avalanche community can now play a direct role in deciding which projects the Foundation funds.
Submissions for the first round of grants open on March 26. Any teams or individuals that have contributed to the Avalanche ecosystem in the past or plan to contribute in the future will be eligible to apply.
Avalanche Community Grants will run multiple rounds, each with its own criteria, deadlines, and dollar limit. Each round will utilize the Gitcoin Grants Stack and a combination of quadratic and retroactive funding to optimize the grant program.
Gitcoin has long been a cornerstone in funding for open source software in Web3. To date, Gitcoin has received 4.2M unique donations, allocated over $60M in funding towards public goods, onboarded 312,000 active developers, and supported 3,000+ development projects through bounties, hackathons, and grant programs. Notable Web3 projects that raised and grew using Gitcoin include 1inch and Uniswap. In 2022, City3, OAK, and the Oakland, California Fund for Public Innovation ran a quadratic funding ecosystem round showing how crypto could be implemented to support local communities.
“Working with Gitcoin is a huge step toward a more inclusive ecosystem on Avalanche, allowing our community to further support projects,” said Aytunc Yildizli, CEO of the Avalanche Foundation. “We look forward to introducing this proven incentive structure to projects and developers building in Avalanche’s growing ecosystem.”
“Gitcoin is excited to bring the power of grants funding to the Avalanche ecosystem in a comprehensive partnership with the Avalanche Foundation, said Kyle Weiss, Co-Founder of Gitcoin. “The Avalanche community is now able to direct the bulk of grants funding and have a voice in the direction of their ecosytem’s growth. It’s a true win for the community who make Avalanche so unique.”
Who is eligible for a grant?
Through community grants, the Foundation will allow users within the Avalanche ecosystem to donate to the projects they believe in and want to support. Grantees, ranging from seed-stage to established projects, must support or directly advance the Avalanche ecosystem, which includes various vertices like:
- Public Goods Software
- Analytics
- Education
- On-Chain Infrastructure & Protocols
- Gaming
- NFTs / Arts & Culture
- Consumer Applications
How to apply
- See active and upcoming grant rounds on the Avalanche Grants page.
- Submit your application during the two-week application period. Submissions must follow eligibility criteria.
- Post the application on the Avalanche Forum, where the community will discuss the proposal before voting.
How to vote
- Create a profile using Gitcoin Passport.
- Verification: Verify your identity with either a Civic or Holonym stamp in your Gitcoin Passport.
- Once the voting period starts, you can donate funds to any project. Donations are then converted into votes using the quadratic funding model.
The Avalanche Community Grants Program is yet another initiative cementing the Foundation’s commitment to scaling the ecosystem. It is a separate initiative from ongoing incentive programs Culture Catalyst, Multiverse, and Avalanche Rush.
Getting started
Avalanche community members can vote on allocations, with higher AVAX matching rewards going to the projects with the most community support. To learn more about the Avalanche Community Grants Program, visit grants.avax.network, and join the Avalanche Grants Telegram chat.
